- Product Information
Amphotericin B is a strong antifungal agent. Since it has activity against a variety of fungal strains, it finds uses in microbiology research. This antifungal is an amphipathic fermentation product of the Gram-positive Streptomyces nodosus bacteria. Amphotericin B is a member of the polyene antifungal class.
These polyene antifungals work by targeting ergosterol, which is an essential part of the cell membrane of fungi. When amphotericin B binds to ergosterol, pores in the membrane are created. Crucial ions leak out of these pores, which leads to in the death of fungal cells.
