cycloheximide is a strong inhibitor of protein synthesis which works on eukaryotic cells’ ribosomes. By attaching itself to the 60S ribosomal subunit in eukaryotic cells, it prevents the growth of fungi. While some bacteria possess natural resistance, cycloheximide is not typically used for selective bacterial inhibition in culture media.
